Nockalm Road Motorcycle Heaven

52 bends and many curves

It is not far from Ebene Reichenau (1,060m) to the junction where the Nockalm Road begins. Then one bend follows the next and after just on nine kilometres the first "high pass", the Schiestlscharte at 2,024 metres, is reached. Here, where an inn also tempts one to stop, are parking spaces reserved for motorcyclists, as well as boards offering information about the landscape and further motorcycle tours and motorcyclist-friendly accommodation, and several "bikers' safes" have been set up. Because a walk on the National Park trails is especially rewarding here.

In lively bends, the two-lane road leads up and down among countless Nocken, and after about 21 kilometres reaches the Karlbad at 1,693 metres; cures are still offered here today as they commonly were in the 19th century. The powerfully healing karst water to 40° Celsius with red-hot stones and then filled into wooden troughs; wellness fans lay in them and are covered with insulating wooden planks, with only the head remaining free. Viewing the ancient cure enterprise is understandably not possible. But one can always make a stop here.

"Bikers' Point" on the Eisentalhöhe

The highest point on the Nockalm Road is the Eisentalhöhe at 2,042 metres. There is also Carinthian fare to be had, and a small "Bikers' Point" has been set up here as a meeting place and information point. Reserved motorcycle parking spaces, and information about the landscape, attractive motorcycle tours and motorcycle-friendly accommodation are a part of the offer. A few kilometres further, at the Nockalmhof at 1,700 metres, motorcyclists can find all necessary information that makes for more than just fun on the bends.

In Innerkrems (1,500m), a late-medieval mining hamlet and today a homely tourist village, is the northern ticket office on the Nockalm Road. Everyone must find out for themselves about which direction is the most beautiful to take on the 33 kilometre, winding road. But it is certainly rewarding to not simply ride through here!
