It is only a few minutes' drive from the Innerkrems toll station to the Nockalmhof, but it is rewarding to make one's first stop here. The Innerkrems area is inseparably connected with its successful mining activities. During the heyday of iron mining at the beginning of the 17th century, twenty miners worked here alone in Innerkrems. But a great many more allied trades and tradesmen profited from the mining - such as lumberjacks, charcoal burners, labourers, transport companies and craftsmen, to mention only a few. The Nockbergs specialist, Clemens Hutter, calculated that a face miner created the need for eight further workers.
The mining exhibition at the Nockalmhof covers the many aspects of the great epoch in mining, which after 500 years came to an end with the change from horse-drawn transport to the railway. But perhaps these insights into the long tradition of mining will also bring new perspectives on one's long excursions through the Nockbergs National Park. There are still plenty of traces for one to find, even after so many years. From a monumental blast furnace to overgrown piles of mining waste, there is still much to discover.
The Route
From the last bend above the Nockalmhof, the broad access path turns of to the right to the Bärengrubenalm (trail 120), which takes half an hour, trail 121 turns left into the open high forest. A pleasant ascent leads to more open areas and the hike becomes richer in views with every step. Passing weather-formed stone pine and larch, the Peitler Nock comes ever closer. Once arriving on the summit, at 2,244 metres, a very inviting descent variant is offered. The descent: the somewhat higher Pernaunock (2,292m) lies in a westerly direction, and the marvellous ridge trail leads straight towards it. The short opposing climb is hardly worth mentioning. From the Pernaunock, the marked trail continues to follow the inviting shoulder to the north and the Weißscharte. The basin above the Bärengrubenalm has now almost been circuited. It is really a shame that with the start of the descent we must say farewell to a fantastic long-distance view. The final part of the circuit hike from the Bärengrubenalm is on the trail already known.
