The Nockalm Road in One Day: 5 Stops That Combine Perfectly

The following route is planned from the Innerkrems side in the north. Visitors starting from the southern side near Ebene Reichenau can follow the same route in reverse order.
This suggested itinerary is ideal for anyone who wants to experience the Nockalm Road in one day, with enough time to enjoy the views, take short walks and include relaxing breaks along the way.

1. Nockalmhof Biosphere Park Centre
A good first stop is the Nockalmhof Biosphere Park Centre. Here, visitors can gain a compact overview of the Nockberge Biosphere Park and its special features. The exhibitions provide insight into what makes this landscape unique, from its natural environment to the development of the region. The Nockalmhof is also a useful place to get oriented at the beginning of the journey. Families with children and visitors who would like an introduction before continuing their drive will find it a worthwhile first stop. Admission to the exhibitions is free.

2. Zechneralm and the Alpine Farming Museum
The route continues to the Zechneralm. The Alpine Farming Museum shows how people used to live and work on the mountain pastures. This stop is especially interesting for visitors who want to learn more about life in the Nockberge region, beyond simply enjoying the scenery. Next to the museum, there is a farmers’ market offering products from the Nockalm region. Families may also wish to allow extra time for the “Marmot Burrow” adventure playground. The Zechneralm is also a starting point for hikes.

3. Eisentalhöhe – the Highest Point of the Nockalm Road
At 2,042 metres above sea level, the Eisentalhöhe is the highest point of the Nockalm Road. From the viewing platform, the landscape opens up across the Nockalm region. Panorama boards help visitors identify the surrounding peaks. This stop is particularly suited to anyone who wants to take in the wide, open mountain landscape of the Nockberge. Short hikes are also possible from here. Those who prefer not to walk far can still enjoy the stop as a viewpoint and photo opportunity.

4. Glockenhütte and the Wishing Bell
A short walk leads to the Glockenhütte. The path is around 400 metres long and takes approximately 15 minutes. There, visitors will find the Wishing Bell, which has become a special stop for many guests travelling along the Nockalm Road. The exhibition “A Window into the Biosphere Park” is located on the first floor of the Glockenhütte. This stop therefore combines a short walk, beautiful views and interesting information about the region.

5. Windebensee
A short nature trail with information boards leads around Lake Windebensee. The walk takes approximately 20 minutes and fits well into a day trip. The trail introduces visitors to the alpine habitats around the mountain lake and offers a peaceful break from the drive. Lake Windebensee is particularly well suited as a final short walk before continuing towards Ebene Reichenau.

Places to Stop for Refreshments Along the Road
A day on the Nockalm Road is also a good opportunity to stop at one of the mountain huts. There are several places to take a break along the road, ranging from traditional snacks to Carinthian specialities. It is worth allowing enough time for this when planning a full-day excursion. Depending on the direction of travel and the day’s itinerary, a refreshment stop can be included flexibly: after a walk, following a visit to an exhibition or as a relaxed end to the journey.

Tips for Planning Your Visit
The Nockalm Road is open from early May until the end of October. Motorcycles are not permitted between 6:00 pm and 8:00 am, which means the final entry for motorcycles is at 5:15 pm. Driving the full road takes around 45 minutes without stops. Visitors planning to include exhibitions, walks/hikes and a meal should allow considerably more time. The exhibitions along the Nockalm Road are generally open from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm, with extended opening times in good weather.
