Daytrip on the Nockalm Road

Nature and exercise amidst the gentle Nockberge in Carinthia

From early May to late October, there are numerous options for an unforgettable daytrip in Austria around the 34 km Nockalm Road between Innerkrems in the north and Ebene Reichenau in the south. Go on a culinary journey from mountain pasture to mountain pasture, conquer the Nockberge while hiking or discover the unique alpine nature with the aid of educational trails and exhibitions. A varied combination is particularly attractive. We’ve been looking around and can now present you a day in the heart of the Carinthian Nockberge. Be inspired by our ideas and put together your own daytrip in Austria’s mountains!

Nockberge at the break of dawn: start of your daytrip in Austria

Mornings in the Nockberge are simply divine! In fair summer weather, the gentle mountain knolls shine in glowing green, the thick forests are pleasantly fragrant – it’s convertible time! Some motorcyclists and a group of athletic cyclists are also out early. After only a few kilometres, the Biosphere Reserve Centre Nockalmhof invites you to take a breather. The fossil exhibition, multimedia and 3D cinema and the interactive bat exhibition offer you first insights into the nature and the habitat of the Carinthian “Nock’n”. After that, the next stop is the Pfandlhütte, where the new exhibition “Wildtiere und Lebensraum” (Eng. “Wild Animals and Habitat”) offers insights into alpine wildlife. Go back “on the road again” after around 20 minutes – up to the Eisentalhöhe, the highest point of the Nockalm Road.

Motorbiking and hiking boots: equipment for your daytrip

On the Eisentalhöhe, we meet the motorcyclists  again, who took a break at the biker’s point. It’s funny how they’re wearing motorbiking boots and we’re changing from walking shoes to hiking boots as the apex of the mountain road is our starting point for today’s hike to the Königsstuhl , a striking yet easily reached summit along the Nockalm Road. We pass the gorgeously blue Lake Friesenhalssee and ascend to the mountaintop, from where we enjoy a grand panoramic view of Salzburg, Carinthia and Styria. Back at the Eisentalhöhe car park we decide to visit the Karlbad. We reach the 300-year-old farmer’s bath not as bathers, but as now rather hungry hikers.

Hiking and hiking break: culinary delights in the Nockberge

The immediate charm of genial hosts and delicacies of the regional Carinthian cuisine are waiting at the Karlbad and numerous other alpine huts and mountain inns. We’re enjoying a hearty traditional snack with homemade bacon, sausages and cheese. A shot of home-distilled schnapps is the delicious conclusion. Now we’re spoilt for choice: would we rather explore the magical “Silva Magica” or walk on the Elements theme path? We decide that we’ve hiked enough today and visit the Glockenhütte, but not without whispering a secret wish into the wind and ringing the Wunschglocke. Afterwards, we walk down to the round hiking trail and Lake Windebensee. The relaxed walk leads us through a unique natural landscape.

Tasty end to a daytrip: fish meal

The 52 bends and many turns are genuine fun with a convertible! Azaleas glow in the distance and alpine meadows with colourful flowers are right next to the road. The Nockberge has one in mind of an Irish mountain scenery on some corners, while others could be straight from a movie. Behind every bend, we see and experience new, uniquely beautiful views. Far too quickly, our trip on the Carinthian mountain road comes to an end. We don’t want to leave the Nockberge without trying a very special delicacy – the char diligently bred by Sigi Gruber. Sadly, it was the last day in the Nockberge for the fish on our plates, but we will definitely be back! A last look back and off we go to the hotel and thermal spa in Bad Kleinkirchheim.
